Buying flights while an immigration decision is pending

Consider change terms and financial risk instead of assuming a decision will arrive on schedule.

General information only, not immigration or legal advice. Reading an article does not create a client relationship. Requirements and policies can change; check the official sources before acting. Eligibility and outcomes depend on individual circumstances and decisions by the relevant authorities. No visa, permit, nomination, admission or permanent residence outcome is guaranteed.

Separate a plan from permission

A desired departure date is not an immigration decision. Check what documentation is needed before travelling and whether your current circumstances affect those requirements. Paying for a flight does not require the authorities to approve an application or admit you to Canada.

Read the fare rules closely

Before purchasing, understand refundability, changes, baggage and the consequences of a missed connection. Flexible terms can have costs of their own, so compare options rather than assuming one ticket type is always best. This is practical planning, not travel insurance or financial advice.

Coordinate other commitments

Accommodation deposits, school start dates and employer arrangements may also depend on travel. Ask providers about alternatives if your plans change. Avoid using an advertised processing estimate as a promised departure date. Where travel could affect an existing status or application, obtain advice specific to your circumstances before booking.

Preparation checklist

  • Confirm travel-document requirements.
  • Read fare and accommodation change terms.
  • Check individual status questions before travel.
