Investigate accommodation and written terms before making a financial commitment from abroad.

General information only, not immigration or legal advice. Reading an article does not create a client relationship. Requirements and policies can change; check the official sources before acting. Eligibility and outcomes depend on individual circumstances and decisions by the relevant authorities. No visa, permit, nomination, admission or permanent residence outcome is guaranteed.

Verify the property and contact

Ask who is offering the accommodation, whether they are authorized to do so and how you can verify the property. Use an independent route to check information. Photos alone do not establish that a listing is genuine. Pressure to send money immediately should not substitute for a proper verification process.

Read the actual agreement

Clarify the address, dates, included utilities, payment terms and cancellation conditions. Ask what happens if your arrival is delayed. Rental rights and obligations are a separate legal subject; consult Alberta’s official housing resources or an appropriate adviser for a dispute rather than relying on an immigration blog.

Match housing to daily needs

Consider your transport options, household size and likely access to work or school. Temporary accommodation can provide time to inspect longer-term choices, but compare its costs carefully. Do not treat a landlord’s assurance about immigration status or employment as immigration advice. A rental agreement does not grant immigration permission.

Preparation checklist

  • Verify the listing before transferring money.
  • Get dates and payment terms in writing.
  • Check provincial rental information.
