Preparing for school registration when moving with children

Ask the receiving school about its process while reviewing immigration questions separately.

General information only, not immigration or legal advice. Reading an article does not create a client relationship. Requirements and policies can change; check the official sources before acting. Eligibility and outcomes depend on individual circumstances and decisions by the relevant authorities. No visa, permit, nomination, admission or permanent residence outcome is guaranteed.

Contact the appropriate school authority

Research the school or school board serving your intended location. Ask about registration, timing and records for your child’s circumstances. A neighbour’s experience may not reflect the same school, grade, residence or immigration situation, so verify directly.

Organize educational and family records

Gather relevant school reports, identity records and other documents the receiving organization identifies. Ask whether translations or particular formats are needed before ordering them. If a record is unavailable, explain that honestly and ask what the school’s process allows rather than supplying an invented substitute.

Check the separate status issue

School registration information is not an immigration assessment. A child’s study-permit requirements and the family’s right to remain in Canada require their own review under current rules. Plan practical dates with room for uncertainty and seek individual advice where immigration circumstances affect the arrangements.

Preparation checklist

  • Ask the school about registration and records.
  • Check translation requirements before paying.
  • Review the child’s immigration questions separately.
