Checking an immigration consultant before you book
Independent licence checks and written service terms are useful safeguards.
Editorial topic date: February 26, 2026. This retrospective collection date is not an earlier publication date or a historical policy update.
General information only, not immigration or legal advice. Reading an article does not create a client relationship. Requirements and policies can change; check the official sources before acting. Eligibility and outcomes depend on individual circumstances and decisions by the relevant authorities. No visa, permit, nomination, admission or permanent residence outcome is guaranteed.
Verify identity directly
For an immigration consultant, consult the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants public register. Check the individual’s name, licence status and relevant details using the live register. A logo or a certificate image on a website is not a substitute for independent verification.
Understand the service being offered
Ask whether you are booking a consultation or retaining someone for a wider service. Review the scope, fees and communication arrangements in writing. Different professionals may be authorized under different regulatory systems; check the appropriate register rather than assuming one register covers everyone who offers advice.
Treat honest limitations as important
A representative should not promise a government decision or ask you to conceal relevant facts. Keep copies of agreements and receipts, and clarify questions before paying. Your choice of representative does not transfer the government’s decision-making authority or eliminate your responsibility to provide accurate information.
Preparation checklist
- Check the appropriate professional register.
- Confirm scope and fees in writing.
- Keep records and question approval promises.
